Use speed when capturing your pictures. If you take too long, the subject could move, the sun could move behind a cloud or it could start raining. Anything could happen, so don't delay. A camera which allows you to make quick photos will give you the best results.
When you are planning to take an action shot in advance, get educated about the subject matter. You cannot take a good shot of something that is moving if you don't understand the types of movement involved. Learn about the movements of the subject matter and it will show in your photos.
Look for patterns in your subject matter, no matter if they happen to be natural or artificial. Patterns add an appealing aspect to a photograph, particularly if they are repeating patterns. You can play off these patterns to get unusual angles or frame your subject relative to the background.
